HNE.Vol.23 Summer Sun Safety – A Natural Perspective

By: Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

“The propaganda and national medical authorities each year have long stated, “the sun causes cancer.” This is as ridiculous as saying “the tonsil is poisoning the whole body.” It is the putrid condition of the body that is poisoning the tonsil, or the skin! All the sun does is to ripen and bring the cancer that is already there to the surface, wherein the waste matter can slough off, so that the body may heal. This is why we must work inside the body with herbs, as well as outside the body with the sun, which will harmoniously speed the curative process and eliminate the problem so there is no recurrence.” – Dr. John R. Christopher, ND, MH

The UV sun rays from the sun convert skin oils to vitamin D. Vitamin D takes calcium from the gut and tissues, like the skin, and deposit it in either the blood or bones. The antagonist of vitamin D is vitamin F, which takes the calcium from the blood and deposits it into the tissues.

Being in the sun for prolonged periods of time without supplementing with vitamin F (Flaxseed oil) will strip your skin of its natural protection (calcium) and lubricant (vitamin F), leading to dry, thick skin. This is due to the sun rays striping calcium from the skin tissues, because of the rapid vitamin D levels being synthesized by the body.  When calcium and vitamin F levels are low it can lead to developing fever blisters, body hives (sun sensitivity/allergy), canker sores. Canker sores and fever blisters are caused by a herpes simplex virus. When calcium stays sufficiently high, the virus will remain dormant. On the contrary, vitamin D production in the skin robs the tissues of calcium and vitamin F, leading to viruses being exposed.

The protocol given by most practitioners of natural health includes taking 2,000 mg of vitamin F (flaxseed oil) and 300 mg of calcium and 50-70mg of magnesium 2 hours prior to going out in the sun, and for a prolonged time in the sun repeat every 60 minutes.

For sun sensitivity you may also want to try the homeopathic remedy Sol (sun rays) prior to entering the sun as a prophylactic measure.

Sunburn, homeopathic recommendations:

In addition to increasing the nutritional recommendation above, you may want to try homeopathic remedies for sun issues. With more than 200 years of empirical observation, homeopathy is a great alternative.

Allergy to the sun:

·         In case of hives from exposure to sun,

o   Sol (sun rays) 9 or 12C

o   Belladonna 9 or 12C

Sunburn:

·         For red, painful skin,

o   Belladonna 9 or 12C

·         In case of burns with blistering, or peeling of the upper layer of skin,

o   Cantharis 9 or 12C

Sunstroke, fainting from the heat of sun:

·         For aftereffects,

o   Glonoinum 9 or 12C (every 5 to 15 minutes, depending on seriousness) Get Medical Care!

·         Prevention,

o   Natrum Muriaticum 9 or 12C (with plenty of water)

Historic recommendations by homeopathic practitioners and companies of homeopathic remedies is 5 pellets, 3x/day.

Other home remedies that may be soothing and healing to mild sunburn are therapeutic grade Lavender essential oil and preservative and color free Aloe Vera Gel applied topically.

Beautiful Glow:

To develop a beautiful glow when out in the sun consider taking the amino acid, L-Tyrosine along with the above nutritional recommendations (vitamin F, calcium, and water). This amino acid is a nutrient needed to produce melanin (pigment in skin), and acts as a natural barrier to the sun’s rays.

Make sure you are properly hydrated throughout the year. A general rule is to drink ½ your body weight in ounces, up to 100 lbs each day.

TURMERIC: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

By: Timothy Hertzberg, ND

Turmeric is a rhizomatous (root) herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family. This spice is one of the main ingredients in curry and a traditionally prepared in a drink called “Golden Milk.”

Turmeric has been extensively researched and found to be superior to many pharmaceutical medications according to the more than 6,000+ peer-reviewed articles referencing curcumin. The most noted medicinal properties are CURCUMIN and TURMERONES.

CURCUMIN is a water soluble constituent in the turmeric rhizome lending the yellow pigment. This constituent is known as an antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

TURMERONES are lipid soluble, fat constituents known to lend powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive (blocks pain signals) agents. Turmerones are extracted using CO2 extraction, making a clean essential oil concentrate. Turmerones are the main active constituents in the turmeric.

When a supplement has multiple concentrates like curcumin and turmerone-essential oils, the liver will sense the constituent as something foreign and tag it for removal very similar to the process a pharmaceutical drug undergoes. There are two methods leading supplement companies help to bypass this process. Turmerones (essential oil lipids) and piperine (medicinal agent in black pepper).

Piperine: is a concentrate active constituent in black pepper. This by itself temporarily inhibits cleansing enzymes in the liver, shutting down phase I and phase II of the liver. Pro: This increases absorption of the curcumins by 7 fold or 1,000 times according to studies. Con: Piperine can lengthen the time of medications in the body. If you are on a medication it is best to talk to your pharmacist before taking a supplement containing piperine, as it might affect the time of the .

Essential Oil Lipids: Turmerones, as mentioned above are essential oil lipids, too large to absorb directly into the blood when consumed. All lipids, fats are absorbed in the lymphatic system, overtime they are broken down, gaining entrance into the blood. Turmerones allow for the curcumin to stay in the system longer as it must first circulate in the lymph, and then transferred into the blood. This enhances the time the curcumin is employed in the body. Companies use Supercritical CO2 extraction, an environmentally ‘green’ method of extracting oils from plants. This method avoids the use of chemical solvents such as acetone or hexane. Supercritical extracts are broad spectrum oil extracts, containing many healing compounds in the herb that are oil based.

New Year, NEW ENERGY!

by Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

Start your New Year with enough energy to tackle your resolutions! Many individuals end the year with stressful family gatherings, which take a toll on our adrenal glands. Consider giving your energy levels a boost with adaptagenic herbs (plants that adapt their nutrients to what the body needs). Gaia Herbs has a new product called Adrenal Health Jump Start. This blend utilizes two powerful adaptagenic herbs, Rhaponticum and Cordyceps, which support the body’s ability to manage fatigue. The formula is now Joanmarie’s go to product, learning that it works the day you start taking it!

The history of Rhaponticum Carthamoides used medicinally began long ago as local hunters studied the behavior of a variety of deer known as Marals (Caspian red deer). At the time of mating, when the male marals fight each other and need to restore their strength, stags dig out and eat rhaponticum root. Local healers discovered that consumption of dried Leuzea (common name) root by man also helped him recover from fatigue and increase his sexual potency. The plant was thereafter named Maral root, now the official common name of Leuzea.

Cordyceps “Viagra of the ancients” is a fungi-mushroom that grows parasitically on insects and arthropods in nature. In Ancient china and throughout Asia it was highly prized, revered by emperors and the aristocratic society. Today, in the wild, cordyceps can fetch a price of fifty-thousand per pound of species C. sinensis. Advanced technology and methods of controlled growing allow for the much cheaper, yet still effective medicinal compounds, specifically cordecepin. Cordyceps are a powerhouse packed full of energy helping with adrenal stamina and lung health.

Gaia Herb Adrenal Health Jump Start is a true jump start intended to be used for 6-8 weeks, then switching to a more long term adrenal supplement to maintain balance your glandular symphony. Gaia Herbs ecologically harvests’ their herbs and has some of the latest and most advanced technology, repetitively testing every product multiple times, ensuring that you have the highest standard product on the herbal market today. They also have a European trained herbalist and Naturopathic Physicians (NMDs) on staff to ensure expert formulation of product and education.

Balance Your Health & Emotions

By Timothy Hertzberg, ND

Siddha Flower Essences - flower essences + homeopathic cell salts. According to Chinese Medicine, there are both internal and external causes of disease. The external causes include: trauma, infection, poor diet, unhealthy lifestyle choices, a harsh working or living environment to name a few. We also have internal causes of disease and it is said that when it comes to maintaining your longevity, addressing the internal factors is even more important than addressing the external factors. In this context, longevity is not how long you live…it is how long you maintain your youthfulness. The internal causes of disease are sometimes known as the 5 Thieves because they rob us of our energy and our youth. These 5 Thieves are: anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, and over-stimulation. Included are all of the variations of these five which means any afflictive emotion that accumulates within the nervous system and degrades organ function over time. Siddha Flower Essences are here to help you resolve the internal causes of disease. This is how flower essences and homeopathics work. By resolving stress in the nervous system the body has a better change to heal itself on all levels. Another way to say this is that our nervous system is an electro-chemical entity. Western medicine does wondrous things addressing the chemical portion of our nervous system. However, according many forms of true traditional medicine that have existed throughout the world for thousands of years, the electrical portion of our nervous system is primary to the chemical. By resolving things on a more subtle electrical / energetic level we are taking care of ourselves from the inside out. This is the essence of preventative healthcare. Flower essences, homeopathy and other forms of these time tested medicines like acupuncture primarily treat the electrical portion of our nervous system. These healing remedies are available at the Natural View Market. Check out the pet remedies for your furry family members!

Intelligence, Endurance and Serenity

By Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

You are what you eat...  consume, transform and process. Take a look at how important B-vitamins are in reaching your greatest potential in life.

B-vitamins play a crucial role in biological processes of the human body on both a physical and mental level. Many B-vitamins are instrumental in producing cellular energy. They help the liver detox many toxins and antidote excess and  Xeno (bad/false) hormones. Each B- vitamin performs unique functions and work best synergistically together in a complex. The majority of B-vitamins are water soluble, meaning the body doesn’t store them in fat as a reserve for a later time of need. This means that they need to be replenished on a daily basis either in a supplement form or through diet (many diets aren’t sufficient) to prevent deficiencies. If taken in supplemental form it’s important that the B-vitamins are methylated to allow full utilization of the vitamin as many individuals don’t have the ability to methylate into a usable form. B-vitamins synthesize many hormones and neurotransmitters in the body. Serotonin is one of the neurotransmitters made from the assistance of B-vitamins. Serotonin can help make people feel confident, happy and calm as it helps to control hormones.

Bacopa is an herb primarily used in ancient medicine from India. This herb is considered an adaptagenic herb which will “adapt” to meet the needs of the body, creating balance. This herb works synergistically with B-vitamins in the production of neurotransmitters and hormones. Bacopa has been used traditionally to enhance mood, memory, digestive function and reduce stress and inflammation.

A methylated B-vitamin complex combined with Bacopa make for a powerhouse, enhancing human intelligence, endurance and serenity. This combination may be your key to living a happier, healthier life – fulfilling your greatest potential.

Simple Salt – Re-mineralize, Alkalize and Cleanse

by Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

Time is running out to do your spring cleaning. According to many philosophies of ancient healing, spring is the time of the year to do a cleansing. All of nature experiences a rebirth of vital energy after hibernating through the winter season. Spring releases internal energy outward through increased circulation. As you look around you will notice that the trees start to push their sap outward while also springing forth leaves and blossoms. Our bodies do the same. Toxins are best released during this time due to the dilatation of blood vessels and increased circulation.

The following is a recommended gentle and easy cleanse. It includes a mug of hot water, pinch of Himalayan Salt, 1 tsp. of Lemon Juice and 2 droppers of Dandelion extract. Or you can prepare your solution in a Himalayan Salt Glass and let it rest a bit before consuming. Do this first every morning on an empty stomach. Your energy will increase as the day goes on.

Himalayan Salt - Salt has been used for healing by many cultures to re-mineralize and purge the bowels. The Hawaiian healers (Kahuna Lapa ’au) would often advise the sick or diseased to purge themselves with the salt water found in the ocean. The Master Cleanse, a classic cleanse also recommends drinking saltwater to help flush toxins out of the body. The Himalayan Salt is unique among salts. This is because it is rich in minerals, lending a deep pink color.

Lemon Juice - quickly converts to an alkaline pH in the body. This stimulates the cleansing of all the cells. Lemon juice is also rich in minerals, especially electrolytes. Lemon juice is especially good for the gall bladder.

Dandelion – this herb, commonly considered a weed is both a digestive tonic (rich in minerals) and mild cleanser, especially the liver. Dandelion shoots forth during the spring season as a signature hinting to its cleansing and renewal properties. Dandelions also help to clean up the environment and one of the first foods for the bees.

Mosquitoes: Prevent The Bite, Prevent The Itch

by Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

As we enter the spring season and warmer weather the mosquitoes are coming out. Not only are they annoying, but they pose a threat to our health. Mosquitoes may act as a vector (parasitic host) possibly carrying the Lyme’s bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi among other pathogens.

According to most naturopathic practitioners, pathogens, including mosquitoes, are attracted to toxic waste material and unnatural states of nature. This is referred to as the Terrain Theory. This theory states that the ‘soil’ or ‘terrain’ of the body (bowels, blood, etc.) when unhealthy and stagnant will attract germs to toxic conditions of the body. If we follow the laws established in nature, live a healthy lifestyle and eat clean the presence of pathogens cannot occur. The German physician and pathologist, Rudolph Virchow (father of modern pathology), once said, “If I could live my life over again I would devote it to proving that germs seek their natural habitat - diseased tissue – rather than being the cause of the diseased tissue; e.g. mosquitos seek the stagnant water, but do not CAUSE the pool to become stagnant.”

Individuals with an O type blood are ‘mosquito magnets.’ A 1972 study was the first to show mosquitoes have a blood-type preference, favoring type O blood over type A or B blood. Eliminating sugar and heavy fats in your diet is helpful overall. According to Chinese Medicine eating pungent foods expels ‘toxic wind’ (toxins) making one less desirable to mosquitos. A few pungent foods are: onions, leeks, ginger, garlic, radish, cabbage, cinnamon.

Essential oils have a long history as natural insect repellents. They contain medicinal properties which naturally protect the plants from bugs and insects. They can also be very helpful at reducing the itch and neutralizing poisons if you have had a mosquito bite. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), Lemon Eucalyptus, works just as well as the toxic chemical DEET for repelling mosquitoes. Other essential oils that are great include: lemon, eucalyptus, citronella, lavender, peppermint and tea tree.

Homeopathy offers some great remedies to help with both repelling insects and soothing the itch. In the 1960’s a homeopathic doctor by the name of H. R. Trexler studied the remedy Staphysagria for its effectiveness at preventing mosquito bites. In a study of 421 subjects over a 4 year period, he found this remedy to be 90% effective. The remedy can be taken orally under the tongue every 2-3 hours when exposed to a mosquito environment. One company, Mozi-Q, has prepared a homeopathic blend with Staphysagria as the main remedy. Other remedies in this blend are very helpful for the itching that comes with a mosquito bite. These tablets are effective within 30 minutes after taking the remedy.

Other chief homeopathic remedies for soothing the itch from mosquito bites are Ledum palustre, Grindelia, Croton tiglium, and Rhus tox. They are all taken orally under the tongue or used topically in an ointment preparation, as needed.

Hidden Causes of Allergy Distress!

By Joanmarie Vanaski, CNT.

Let's start out by defining "Allergy". It is an exaggerated immune reaction and response to a perceived irritation, i.e. Allergen. Therefor, a healthy response could be; when mast cell levels and functioning of mast cells operate without causing a cascade of distress resulting in allergy symptoms. Extensive tissue damage and inflammation tends to promote release of anti- inflammatory compounds as the body begins to lose order. Your body is now operating in high stress mode. We end up with an endless cycle of chronic symptoms. We all know how fatiguing allergic reactions effect our body. What we don't want to do is reach for the "quick fix" such as Claritin, Zyrtec and Benadryl if you are a chronic sufferer. Understanding the root cause will over time bring complete relief to an overactive immune system.

So here are 4 areas to consider:

1- Quiet and calm/ stabilize the mast cells to keep them from triggering excessive histamine release. Degranulated mast cells actually hyper activate, cascading into an increase in thick mucous, narrowing air passages, causing swelling while releasing even more exaggerated immune functions.

2- Restore microbial balance and make good use of digestive enzymes. The demands of continued allergic response takes its toll on the gut. The chance of more tissue damage compounds the problem unless the gut is strong and vibrant.

3- Support the function of the adrenal glands in order to balance cortisol output and put a stop to excessive stress response to allergens. Strong adrenals increase resistance to physical, chemical and biological stressors.

4- Liver support as the liver will process inflammatory waste metabolites from allergy reactions.

Here are some suggested nutrients to use to build up, prevent and calm when allergies become more than the body can handle:

1- Improve your diet by favoring antioxidant rich foods that are high in flavonoids. Avoid dairy and sugar and grains containing gluten.

2- Osha Root quiets and soothes mast cells and liquifies mucous, supporting a healthy response to irritations as allergens are quickly washed out of the respiratory tract. Osha is the best herb to strengthen respiratory tissues.

3- High levels of vitamin C as well as pantothenic acid (B5) will support adrenal glands thereby stabilizing upper respiratory tract.

4- Quercetin, Bromalain, Fresh Stinging Nettles, Mullien also keeps tissues calm, normalizing secretions stimulating its removal from tissues while reducing symptoms.

Simple but it works!

Today’s Tox-SICK Children

by Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

In today’s society many children are suffering from the environmental toxin overload. There are roughly 84,000 chemicals found in our environment. A few examples of environmental toxins are automotive fumes, pesticides, herbicides, plastics, drugs, artificial food colorings, neurotoxins (aspartame, MSG, etc.) and the list goes on and on.

The toxins in our environment are unnatural to the human organism and the body will attempt to eliminate the poison if the detoxifying systems are properly working. Though we have the capability to detox many toxins, we generally don’t have the mineral and vitamin reserves to initiate the cleansing systems. Or the load is so great that the system is overwhelmed. The toxins, though minute, slowly build up to physical or mental altering levels cumulatively over time.

As a child continues to grow, many body systems are still under development.  With the rise of childhood diseases such as leukemia, brain tumors, asthma, neurodevelopmental disorders, autism and obesity we need to take a serious look at the environmental toxins that accumulate.

NDF (Natural Detox Factors) stands for the primary ingredient, a micronization of chlorella, which binds to heavy metals and chemicals, safely removing them from the body.

The following are four suggested products indicated for children that contain NDF.

CALM BLEND (Immune, Mood) if they are:

·       Grumpy

·       Can’t Sleep

·       Moody

·       Anxious

·       Frustrated

SHINE BLEND (Probiotic) if they have:

·       Nervous/ upset Stomach

·       Bowel Issues

·       Sugar Cravings

·       Nonsocial

·       Delayed Speech

FOCUS BLEND (Balancing Blend, IQ) if they show:

·       Focus problems

·       Brain Fog

·       Lack of Energy

·       Seasonal Histamine Response

HAPPY BLEND (Anti-parasite)if they show:

·       Anger

·       Itchy Rectum (Parasites)

·       Sugar and Carb Cravings

·       Emotional Turbulence

What do pure Beeswax Candles & Himalayan Rock Salt Lamps have in common?

Research credit by Pat Darga, CNT.

They both have the ability to clear & purify the air of unhealthy positive ions! Airborne "positively" charged ion emissions come from household furnishings, toxins, dust, carpet, wood, pets, mold, bacteria, pollen and all electronics. Positive ions are not "weighted" or balanced by their negative counterpart and become recycled in the air and heating systems then find their way into electronics and computers and more. As a result we are fatigued, sleepless, and plagued with breathing problems.

Both salt lamps and beeswax candles purify the air by emitting "negatively" charged ions through the power of Hygroscopy. This natural process takes these molecules traveling in water vapor, absorbing them trapping them while releasing a balance of negative ions into the air. The warm lamp and a burning beeswax candle has the capacity to enhance the quality of the air we breathe.

People who suffer from asthma feel some relief after a week or two. Chronic cough for instance can be the result of too much positive ions in the air as these weaken the microscopic cilia that line the windpipe making it easier for contaminants to get into the lungs. An abundance of negative ions from candles and salt lamps can increase energy levels by increasing our blood supply of oxygen to the brain. Sleep patterns are also improved.

Most of us enjoy a nice drive through the clean countryside or time at the beach, or camping in the mountains- it is no coincidence that these activities expose us to health-filling negatively charged ions generated through nature. Bring a salt lamp and or a natural beeswax candle in your home and let them pump an abundance of negative ions into your home!

When Will It End?

by Dr. Timothy Hertzberg, ND

This year seems to have taken a toll on the lungs as respiratory problems seem to linger on. From a traditional Chinese medical viewpoint the lungs are the most delicate organs in the body, which explains why they are so easily injured by external influences, such as swift temperature change. It’s interesting to note, that the lungs and sinus cavities have nearly identical cellular tissue.

Our remedy from Herbs Etc., Lung Tonic is a blend of herbs formulated by a medical herbalist, Daniel Gagnon, MS. This professional strength blend helps to dry up mucus and strengthen the respiratory system, detox the colon, (stimulate natural immunity and clear sinus infections. Lung Tonic is a true tonic (strengthening and nutritive) to the respiratory system. The blend can be used long-term if needed. It is ideal for any respiratory problem and has been employed in management of COPD, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, and chronic asthma. As with any natural remedy they work best when the diet is wholesome and full of nutrients.

Your lungs are an organ which allows our body to receive vital nutrients from the atmosphere (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, etc.) and at the same time, able to detox inner metabolic wastes.

Keep your lungs clear and functioning!

“Diet is Key. Without changing the diet, all of the supplements and medications in the world won't rid the body of Candida. The right food is the best medicine; it restricts the growth of Candida and aids in the growth of beneficial bacteria.”

– Joel Edwards from Natural News

The Human Microbiome has only recently been at the forefront of science. It wasn’t until just this past decade that we’ve discovered the importance of the microscopic critters residing in and on our bodies. Trillions of microbes exist within the walls of our entire alimentary canal- from our mouth to our colon- including our stomachs, intestines, urogenital tract, and respiratory tract. They even cover our entire body, acting as an armor, preventing outside germs from entering our body through our skin.

We depend on our beneficial bacteria to protect us from harmful pathogens such as parasites, fungi like Candida, harmful bacteria and viruses. The beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, are also responsible for helping to breaking down our food to release nutrients and usable energy. Probiotics also produce vitamins, lipids, bioactive peptides, and synthesize hormones.

A healthy human has about 80% beneficial bacteria (probiotics) and 20% bad bacteria (fungi, parasites, etc...) residing in their gut. Unfortunately, this balance is usually reversed with the Standard American Diet and lifestyle. The following lifestyle and diet choices we make every day create an environment within our gut that parasites and Candida thrive in, allowing them to outnumber the probiotics:

*C-section/formula feeding

*Chlorine/fluorine “purified” water

*Contraceptives

*Pesticides/chemical-laden foods

*Antibiotics

*Lack of cultured foods in our diet (fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, tempeh, miso...etc.)

* Chronic high cortisol (the hormone our bodies produce during stressful situations.)

Several clinical studies have proven that by improving the good-to-bad bacteria ratio, we directly improve our overall health and well-being, from digestion to mental health. How might we improve this ratio? Three steps:

1. Increase your probiotic intake.

Powder, liquid or encapsulated probiotic supplements are by far the most convenient way to increase the good bacteria count in your gut. Typically, a good probiotic will consist of several different probiotic strains, which is great; diversity is crucial. While all probiotic strains will likely improve digestive and immune health, each specific strain has a different role in the body. For example: lactobacillus acidophilus is well-known for warding off Candida, as well as maintaining cholesterol levels. Bifidobacterium longum, on the other hand, colonizes in our bodies, and is well-known for its antioxidant properties. It and has been shown to reduce anxiety. Garden of Life, Get Real Nutrition and MegaFood are just a few brands that make high-quality, diverse probiotic supplements. Incorporating more fermented foods- like the ones our ancestors used to thrive off of, will increase the good-to-bad bacteria in your gut. These foods include raw sauerkraut, kimchi, tempeh, miso, pickles, and raw cheeses. Beware of commercial yogurts! They are typically loaded with sugar. Unless you are making your own yogurt at home, I would not recommend consuming yogurt as your main probiotic source.

2. Increase your prebiotic intake

Prebiotics are basically food for the probiotics. They act as a fertilizer for the good bacteria present in the bowels and colon. Acacia fiber, organic potato starch, chicory root and asparagus are all examples of plant sources that are rich in these non-digestible fibers that act as fuel for probiotics.

3. Moderate your “demons”

We all love sugar, we’re human. We’re designed to. But we have to learn how to moderate the foods that wreak havoc on our bodies. Sugar, alcohol, refined carbohydrates, and artificial sweeteners like sucrose and aspartame are FUEL for the bad bacteria and fungi, especially Candida. When we excessively consume these depleting foods, we are feeding disease in our body. Choose when you want to enjoy a brownie or a beer, but make sure it truly is moderation. And don’t have both! If you need some soul food, have that ice cream sundae and enjoy it. If your work week was tough and you want to unwind with a glass or two of wine, go for it. But don’t devour the sundae and follow that with the two glasses of wine. That’s not moderation! Before an indulgence, ask yourself, is this truly going to enhance my life experience? Is it really worth it? Or am I going to regret this and feel awful after eating it?

By incorporating these three habits into your daily lifestyle, you’re nurturing your colony within, and preventing the “bad guys” from taking over. Your overall well-being and quality of life will be improved, creating a happier, healthier you!

Redox Signaling Transforms Aging!

by Joanmarie Vanaski, CNT.

The first thing a cell does when it’s sick is try to detoxify itself. A cell is mostly water, and drinking 75 ounces per day for a 150 pound individual will help the cell clean out. Cellular detoxification is enhanced when increased levels and utilization of SOD (sodium oxide dismutase), catalase and glutathione are present. These antioxidant enzymes produced naturally in the body help eliminate oxidative stress which in turn, slows down aging. That’s why increasing their availability to function for the cells benefit is crucial. This is where redux signaling molecules come in.

Our own network of these signals is under constant threat due to oxidative stress. Redox signaling is part of the process that allows the cells to recognize that damage has taken place and instructs the cell to take steps to repair. The cell signaling is then passed on to other cells in the community, saving them as well, resulting in efficient repair and replacement of new cells. If the oxidative stress is too great or in chronic stages, the cells cannot send or receive these redox messages. Aging, wrinkles, slower healing, cancer, cell death and pain are the result.

Redox messengers are readily found in sea water solution. Our cells contain a fluid portion called cytosol which contains the molecular machinery to help carry redox signals from the cell membrane to sites within the cell for more communication and instruction. One crucial step is the signaling of mRNA (messenger RNA). Redox signaling mRNA begins the process to recover the cell’s renewal potential and it’s functioning as it carries instruction to the manufacturing areas with its own copy of DNA instructions.

Our end result in all of this and more means we have; improved nerve and muscle communication. We have increased levels of neurotransmission. We have better digestion, metabolism, organ function, tissue growth, hormone production and efficacy and most of all, the cells understand how to regulate gene expression. Increasing Redox signaling molecules in a sea water solution will give you and your body the power to change our genetic predisposition!

“Mind Your PQQ’s!”

Could PQQ (pyrroloquinoline quinone) be considered the next nutrient superstar? Yes, indeed it can, according to Dr. Michael Murray, the world’s leading authority on Natural Medicine. He believes PQQ will be considered an essential nutrient in the future. PQQ is naturally present in parsley, green pepper, kiwi, eggs and green tea and has a B vitamin- like activity. Taken as a supplement, it may have a possible neuroprotective role during the aging process. According to preliminary studies, PQQ has other benefits such as an anti-inflammatory, (reducing C-reactive protein), benefits to insulin resistance, improving brain function by increasing nerve growth factor, improving sleep, mood and fatigue. It’s most important role is in mitochondria energy production by increasing the number of mitochondria and their efficiency. PQQ is VERY stable, recyclable by glutathione many times over, and, because it is a redux agent, it can automatically reduce oxidants thereby modifying signaling processes that go on in the body’s cells. Reducing oxidative stress promotes proper healing throughout the body. PQQ goes very well with CoQ10!

"Power Up the Will"-changing your perspective on the role of willpower!

Now is not the time to talk about self control. True or False? If you said False, think again! Changes made during the challenges of the the holiday season will cement a more positive focus on your real goals and desires.

Did you know that practicing good habits will leave willpower intact by putting desirable behaviors on autopilot? So why not set yourself up so you don't have to use it? Instead use your willpower for "playing offense"- setting up your life to encourage positive healthy behavior. Devise little things that will help you get there, repeat those same positive actions over and over again until they become automatic. Little things such as add an extra weight at the gym, run an extra minute on the treadmill, fill you plate only half full, make at least one Super Nutritious no holds barred snack once everyday, tell a friend what you are doing. When people believe that willpower is a limited resource, it becomes easy to give into temptation. Conversely when you think willpower is limitless it's easier to stick to you goals. Willpower is a vast reservoir and good habits become what you can't live without!

New interest in Medicinal Mushrooms has been stimulated by a large number of research studies. One of the key results that have come out of these studies is the discovery of a number of compounds that has been shown to support the immune system function and inhibit tumor growth. These compounds are called polysaccharides. German researchers have demonstrated that these immune-activating polysaccharides are similar to those found in Echinacea and Astragalus. To further the potential found in medicinal mushrooms, a fermentation process can be applied. Fermentation or culturing methods results in beneficial secondary metabolites and their complexes, such as proteins, fatty acids and antioxidants, each unique to the mushroom’s potential as a healing agent. Efficient production of metabolites in the fermentation process will yield high levels of these complexes for the following advanced benefits:

CORDYCEPS-- and its metabolites are revered for healthy metabolism and athletic endurance as well as general performance vitality.

REISHI—and its metabolites is a legendary enhancer of health. Sharpens memory, improves mood and an over-all sense of well-being while improving the support of cardiovascular functioning.

TURKEY TAIL—and its metabolites display anticancer activity in preliminary human research and may reduce cancer recurrence.

LION’S MANE—and its metabolites is noted for cognitive function, nerve protection, healthy neuron transmission while improving memory as well as reduction of beta amyloid plaques associated with Alzheimer’s

An innovative synergistic combination of these medicinal mushrooms with functional foods, super juices and traditional botanicals transformed by MTS fermentation technologies, make a success out of REAL FOOD nutrients! www.GetRealNutrition.com

Injuries, infection, poor diet, and aging can all take part in causing the beginning stages of acute inflammation. Acute inflammation signals the body to neutralize invaders, setting up the next stage that requires a resolution phase to repair the damages. If successful, then the body returns to homeostasis. If unresolved on the other hand, the fire continues in the form of “Chronic Inflammation”.

During the initial stages of inflammation, the immune system will release an accelerated process toward repair. Then, the resolution phase must kick in, decreasing these pro-inflammatory producing chemicals so the body can heal correctly, back to normal condition. It is during this phase that the resolution capacity becomes critical in stopping chronic inflammation and tissue degradation.

And it is here where “SPM’s” come in to play. SPM’s are a family of signaling molecules produced during the resolution phase and essential for shutting down inflammation at just the right time.

The majority of SPMs are found in essential fatty acids- in particular a specialized “Fractionated Lipid Concentrate” from Omega-3 EPA, DHA & AA which is Omega-6. Each exerts a distinct resolution-related activity. This ground breaking research shows promise for controlling and RESOLVING inflammation!

Let’s take a look at the newest report regarding Calcium supplementation and intake of foods high in Calcium! Recently we learned that researchers from the University of Aukland, New Zealand advised that supplementation and eating foods high in Calcium does not favor better bone health. At best, they saw a 1-2% increase in bone mass among seniors. The role that calcium plays in the body is very diverse, ie. nerve signaling and transmission, hormone release, muscle contraction, and even blood pressure regulation. And yes, Calcium can be harmful if not supported with the balance of specific minerals and vitamins, and should NEVER be taken alone as an isolate. Having said that, there is more to bone health then just calcium; for instance: you need phosphorus to make the bones hard, Vitamin K2 for directed deposition of calcium on the scaffolding, magnesium and D for absorption as well as the rest of the mineral composition to keep everything in balance. And one more thing; the chelator determines what role in the body calcium will play to achieve the desired function and effect.

Forming new and breaking down old bone material keeps the bones in constant flux. Since Calcium is the main building material of bone it must be incorporated to be effective. That’s where MBP comes in. MBP is a protein complex that forms the mortar of bone structure and is VERY effective at putting dietary calcium to work! 4 controlled human clinical studies showed healthy net bone formation results for women of all ages after 6 months of supplementation. MBP works by increasing the activity of bone building cells relative to old bone dissolving cells. Maybe this is why this narrow research showed such deficient results. We invite you to come in and learn more!

Today we are going to discuss the best ways to over-come stress eating behavior by supporting diet-related willpower. A recent neuroscience study reveals that moderate stress can sabotage your diet. How can we avoid reaching for that junk food preference and keep our resolve strong when under stress? Here are 3 great suggestions that have been shown to be effective:

I.—a study done in 2013 measured the effect of 2 medicinal plants, Magnolia officinalis and Phellodendron amurense, (also known as RELORA) on Cortisol level and mood state. These supplements are intended to induce relaxation, reduce stress as well as stress-related eating. After 4 weeks, cortisol levels were significantly lower including improvement in a variety of mood state parameters such as tension, anger, fatigue and depression.

II.—According to Dr. Michael Tierra a well-known Oriental Medicine practitioner, the flowers and bark of the Albizia Tree are among the most valued of Chinese botanicals for relieving anxiety and stress without side effects. Albizia, in his opinion offers a more profound effect in treating depression and anxiety than the 2 most commonly promoted supplements St. John’s Wort and Kava. In his practice he has noted that those suffering from acute or chronic stress noticed a marked improvement in a single day of use.

III.—Drink Lavender infused Lemonade. Lavender has been shown to balance nervous tension and depression. Mix 6 Cups Organic Lemonade with a heaping Tablespoon of Lavender Flowers. Place in fridge for one week, filter and drink! You can also add a splash of organic blueberry juice for a boost of antioxidants!
